Haiku: Defenses Down

I pondered long and hard about whether or not to post this, because it is personal and not something I'm proud of. But as I brainstormed the "Defenses Down" prompt at One Single Impression this week, this is what kept coming back to my mind time and time again. And so I share it with you....

Long, long ago, before I was married to Hubby, I had a brief marriage to a man I'll call Meanie. I didn't realize he was a meanie at the time, of course, but in looking back I realize that I married him for the wrong reasons. It wasn't long after we married that the cold, hard truth that he had a drinking problem set in. And he was a mean drunk. And altho I thought he was harmless, one night he punched me across the face and broke my jaw.

I was caught off-guard,
Never thought to be afraid
Of my own husband.

At first I lied about it - told everyone I fell in the bathtub. Because I was ashamed. But it also wasn't much longer that I got away from him. Because Hubby the Hero saved me - gave me the confidence I needed to get away from Meanie. Then swept in and married me himself. That clever fellow!

Riding a white horse,
He broke my defenses down
And captured my heart.

*Be sure to stop by One Single Impression this week to see all the wonderful poetry!

I just love a happy ending story! Love the "captured my heart". Very sweet!

Just curious, what are you all doing for Ike? I think we are going to have a mandatory evacuation here in Corpus. We live out on Padre Island and think we may have to go tomorrow. I'm a little overwhelmed.
Take care,
Julie

Glad you shared, too. You did an awesome job with your haikus! I could use a prince, but I'll keep my joker for now.

Interesting comment from Sandy Carlson: never heard her cynical before!

Your first haiku is very good, Bubba Sis. It has the power to make the reader suck breath. Very good ...

I admire your ability to be so candid on your blog. Striving for that myself...

I'm so sorry you had to experience Meanie before you got your hero. But I'm so glad you got your hero. So glad.

These are both wonderful. So gutturally true. (Yeah, I doubt that's a word, but you know what I mean.)

Well, I knew he was a meanie and I should've run over the little B#@$!!* when I had the chance! But, then you got the Chance (get that play on words???) and your prince charming and your life has been wonderful since.

Thank you for sharing your story. It's very familiar. When one's in that place, it's hard to imagine that Meanie will be a distant memory and Hubby Hero even exists! Hooray for God having better plans for us than we do!

Wow, girlfriend... That was an emotional post... probably for you, but also for me. That first haiku... made me gasp. Though I don't know your Hubby, I like what D... said, "And that's why your hubby is one of my heroes too!" And your mama - she's golden :)

I am so glad you were able to get out and have a glorious life filled with so many good things!
