Sincerely 'Fro Me to You - Curls, Part I

Texas girls are supposed to have big hair. MY hair is ridiculously straight. It always has been. When God was handing out curly hair, I must have been hiding behind the door.

Oh, but Bubba's Mom wanted it to be curly! And oh, how we tried and tried to achieve the perfect curls. I spent a lot of time in rag curlers.

We would roll it up wet, then I would usually sleep in these lovely things (SO comfy! NOT!). Most of our Christmas morning or Easter morning pictures are of me in curlers. If we were going somewhere special at night, we'd wet it and roll it in the morning and I'd wear them all day while my hair dried into cute little ringlets. Sometimes Bubba's Mom would roll it so tight I think my eyes were slanted.

The end result was usually something like this:

This would last for a few hours tops, and then it would fall and be flat as a fritter again.

Until we discovered home perms.

Tune in next week for that excitement. You'll bust a gut.

I will trade you, your straight hair for my CURLY hair from you know where! Thank goodness for whomever invented flat irons!

I had to laugh when I saw the pics of the tie-curlers, as my sister has straight hair and I recall many a night laying in bed listening to her moan about how uncomfortable they were!

Oh me too! Never had curly hair until I got my hair permed. You were awfully pretty though!

I have scrolled through your blog and I really like it! I even read your LAST week's Fro me to you.

Be blessed.

Home perms!! Nothin' like them! I had stick straigh hair my whole life and something happened at 19. . . . it turned curly like my mom's. And honestly, it was one of the greatest things to happen to me. It's now crazy curly and I secretly love it :-)

I remember those curlers! Did you have the Dippity Do Dah gel that you put all over them too? Those were the days. My hair is straight but has lots of body and curls well, so most of the time mine would be about 3 times bigger than what yours is in the picture. Totally embarrassing! My mom thought that bigger was better. Unfortunately my friends did not :(

So cute! I remember the rollers and the pain!

Can't wait to bust a gut! (Does that help you lose weight too?)

Great photos!

Were you blonde in that first pic?!

Awww, look at you all blonde and all. :) Your big hair pic isn't as bad as you had me thinking. So cute!

As you know from my pics, I didn't need the rag curlers. But, as I got older, you know once the curls left, I tried the foam rollers. Yuck! Uncomfortable! And, while the back was gorgeous, the sides/front were horrendous! Yes, home perms. Thank goodness for them! ;)

I so remember rag rolling my haif. Now I have wavy hair and can go straight or curly. Why didn't I have it growing up?

Love these pictures!

Cute!!! I can hardly wait for next weeks pics!

But I thought your hair was wavy?

Mine, too, is board-straight, but I started perms at 8 years old. Because I wanted them, not my Mama. Although it did make it easier for her to do my hair....

LOL...oh those home perms. I am surprised I still had hair after each one of them.
Maybe I should pull some rollers out so my daughter can have the curls she so desires.

Big hair, straight hair, I love you both ways. Great shots--very chic, actually! xoxo

Your hair is just like mine...only I couldn't wash it for a week before curling it - the dirt and oils helped it keep the curl. If my hair was clean when I tried to curl it, the curls would last 45 minutes, tops.

So, so cute! My hair was always too long for rag curlers, but I rocked the spiral perm!
